Information

We pride ourselves on our adaptability and commitment to excellence in every aspect of our study. Explore our research design and how it ensures the voices of young women are heard in our YPAR (Youth Participatory Action Research) study on sexism.

Inquiry on the Study Design: YPAR

What is the goal of the Herstories: YPAR Study?

Our goal is to give young women a platform to share their experiences and insights, to have an impact on the occurrence of sexism in girls' daily high school experiences.

What specific challenges does your research design help you overcome?

We want to create a safe and supportive environment for girls to learn about the issue of sexism and to share their own stories of their daily experiences at school, fostering open communication.

How does your research approach set you apart from other studies?

This study gives the youth, who are actually experiencing sexism, the voice to share their daily realities within their public school context.

It empowers girls to create an awareness and propose action for educational practitioners and policymakers to move toward increasing gender equity.

In what ways does your research design ensure that the voices of participants are accurately and respectfully represented?

The voicing of experiences will take place through a sharing Circle, so that every voice is given equal opportunity and focus to be heard. Audio recordings will take place and transferred to written transcripts.

There will also be journalling, which provides participants the capacity to self-reflect on what they are learning and witnessing.

How are participant's insights incorporated into the research process?

Participants will devise their own research sub-questions which will drive the direction of the study. Each workshop session will inform the exact content of the next.

Co-researchers' insights will be highlighted in the sharing about the study and in the study's written findings.

How is the research presented?

Participants will decide the final research presentation format and what audience it will be presented to, ensuring their insights shape the final product.
