Inquiry on the Study Design: YPAR
What are the goals of the "Herstories": Empowering High School Girls through Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR)?
The goal is to provide a platform for high school girls to share their experiences and insights, to have an impact on the occurrence of sexism in schools. The study aims to empower these youth through supporting their capacity to make change.
This YPAR study provides opportunities for girls to voice their realities within their public school context. The study design creates a safe and supportive environment for girls to learn about the issue of sexism and to foster open communication about their lived experiences.
Through co-creating an awareness of sexism in schools, and proposing action to disrupt, there is hope to move toward increasing gender equity in school by educational practitioners and policymakers.
How are participant's voices and insights incorporated into the research process?
Participants will devise their own research sub-questions which will drive the content of the study. Each workshop session will inform the direction of the next.
The voicing of experiences will take place through a sharing Circle (a familiar school experience), so that every voice is given equal opportunity and focus to be heard. Audio recordings will take place and transferred to written transcripts. There will also be personal journalling, which provides participants the capacity to self-reflect on what they are learning and witnessing. The final co-researcher presentation will be video recorded, if appropriate.
Co-researchers' insights will be highlighted in their chosen
sharing about the study and in the study's written findings. Please know that your actual name will not be used, but a pseudonym of your choosing.
